No more sickies! Everyone is healthy again. Thank goodness!
Abby was able to get back to her normal therapy schedule this week. She has 6 sessions each week (2 physical therapy, 2 occupational therapy, 1 speech, 1 feeding). So missing all of last week was kind of a big deal. Oh therapy, we missed you! It was nice to get back into her normal routine this week. Abby did all sorts of cool stuff - like painting with her feet! She really got into it. Her OT would hold up the plate with the paint on it and Abby would reach her leg over to put her foot on it, then back over to the wall to 'paint.'
She also demonstrated some amazing visual motor skills. She was able to put toothpicks into the holes of this cheese shaker. She even got most of them in on the first try - she wasn't just feeling around until they went in. She knew exactly where she wanted them to go and got them in. I was impressed.
It seems like during the last week or two Abby has really gotten more stability and coordination. I feel like I say this every week, but she really is getting stronger all the time and it is very noticeable from week to week. On Thursday she spent a little bit of time in a walker. She didn't like it though because she felt like it was backwards because the cross bar was in the back, not the front. She didn't want to pull it, she wanted to push it and would keep turning around in it. But at one point she was holding on to the hand grips and lifted both legs - like she was doing gymnastics. It was pretty funny. But she didn't have much, if any, support from her PT when she did it. She was using her own upper body strength. Pretty cool.
So those are the Good News Moments for the week. But there are also some Bad News Moments...
She has started throwing up again and we have no idea why. It started when she was sick and we just figured it was because she was sick and swallowing so much snot. But she is still doing it. Not cool. She is also keeping us up most of the night again. It is really weird - she is asleep, but moving all over the place. We will hear her on the monitor when she starts moving around. When we go check on her she is sitting up in bed, rolling around, on all fours, or hitting the wall. But her eyes are closed the whole time. And when she gets laid back down she is totally out. Then a minute or two later she shoots back up and tries to do it again. This will go on for an hour or two at a time. It is like she is sleep walking, without the walking, and it kind of creeps me out. She has fallen out of bed 3 times this week because of it, even with the barriers we have in place to prevent it, so we feel like we have to be in there with her just so she doesn't get hurt. Not cool. Also, does anyone know of a GOOD pediatric NEUROLOGIST? We are pretty fed up with the one we have now. I really don't like doctors. I took Spencer in to the pediatrician today for his one-year well check. As we were leaving there was a little girl coming in and she kept screaming, "I don't want to go to the doctor! I don't want to go!" I kept thinking that is what Abby will be like once she can talk again. We usually have at least one appointment with some specialist every week. She has had way too many unpleasant doctor's appointments, and I'm sure there are still many more to come. I am at the point now where I feel like we have ALL been though enough. We've learned, we've grown, and now I just want everything to be fixed.
Karalee, you are the best mom in the world. Abby and Spencer are SO lucky to have you. I hope things improve. We're praying for you.
ReplyDeletePlease let me know if there is anything I can do to help you, Karalee! I would really love to.
ReplyDeleteI feel like such an idiot going on and on the other night about how great it was that she wasn't throwing up anymore ... you were just too nice to not correct me. So sad to hear that and that she is waking up at night. But her progress is amazing and I'm glad there is so many good things happening for her and your family.
ReplyDeleteWay to go Abby. Keep up the good work.
